San Telmo and Recoleta Markets

On Sunday January 9, the same day we went to El Tigre, Sam and I went to the San Telmo market.  This is a craft market that only happens on Sundays in San Telmo.  Basically there are street vendors that line all the streets of San Telmo.  They have jewelry, souverniers, shoes, clothes, food, music, aboriginal things, bolichas for yerba mate, and anything else you can think of.  The streets were very crowded and we had to  stick together.  I also got very burnt!  But I had a lot of fun.

After having lunch, we went to another market in Recoleta near the cemetary, which happens only on Saturdays and Sundays.  This market was much more open, and the vendors were in a park instead of on the streets, and they lined the sidewalks.  There was an open space in the middle with grass where you could sit and watch a live band.  But I think the best part of this place was the acrobatic show!  Here is a picture of a guy doing flips over a really high string.
We heard drums, and we decided to move closer to the noise, and we saw a crowd of people sitting in a circle.  There were 2 guys who were doing gymnastics and jumping over people’s heads.  It was crazy!

I liked both markets  equally, but they both had their positive and negative aspects.  The San Telmo market had much nicer items for sale, and it was not too expensive.  But, it was so crowded and we always had to be aware of our belongings in case someone tried to steal something.  The Recoleta market was less crowded and their was more room to walk around.  I liked that you could sit in an open area and watch live music or watch the acrobatic show.  Hopefully we can make it back to these markets again!
